Overloaded? How to Reclaim More Time for Yourself 09/23/2011

Life balance is something that we all aspire to. While it may seem like a goal, you will never achieve, there are some simple steps you can take to gain control of your life instead of it having control of you.
Of course it's challenging to find time for you with work, family and other obligations all competing for your attention. However imagine living a life in which your time is your own and where your opportunities for fun and enjoyment are equally balanced with opportunities for work.

Try making these simple changes to reclaim your time and achieve more balance: 

Decide that when you do something with friends or family that you will be fully engaged in the process. Do not allow yourself to have a negative attitude or be distracted by other things. You will find yourself enjoying the time and activities much more.
Re-evaluate your traditions - If the old ones are causing you too much stress, too much money, and too much energy, choose some new ones.    

Choose to be "out of pocket." We need to choose to be out of pocket more often. No cell phones, no email, no texting, and no appointments. The world will survive with out you during your down time. 

Take a conscious pause between one task and the next. Quite often you slide into the next task while still thinkng of the one you just finished. Take a moment to feel and acknowlege the accomplishment you just made - "declalre yourself satisfied". Then take this step further by clearing all the mental chatter from that task as you create a space of peace and silence; even if it's just taking 30 seconds to do this. When ready move on to the next task fully focused.

Finding yourself on the couch with remote in hand during your free time? Using the time to engage in creative or athletic pursuits that help you grow as a person gives you a lasting sense of joy and fulfillment, which will further inspire you to clear room in your life for growth and self-discovery. How you use the time you do get has a big bearing on whether you will actively seek to create that time in future.

Begin the Cure by Harnessing the Momentum Around that Fabulous Idea of Yours

What do I mean by this?  Throughout your day you can get many ideas and visions for your business or work life. These ideas inspire you to do something differently or more efficiently; increases your revenue or to create something new altogether. But how many of those 'great' ideas have you actually acted upon and just stay on your to-do-list; where they  slip away like a faded dream? ...or perhaps it gets filed under 'T'.

Don't worry you are not alone, idea-itis runs ramped among the business world, here's a quick tip on what to do about it:

What NOT to do:

If you wait on that killer idea too long it only begins to look like more work, you get overwhelmed and the less likely you will follow through on it.


Instead, bring your ideas into the physical with these simple steps!
  • Take all of those ideas rolling around upstairs and get them on paper - purge! But realize you can't do them ALL
  •  Look over your list of ideas and circle or highlight the ones that are going to make the biggest difference for you, with your clients or in your business.
  • Cut your idea list down further to 2, 3 or 4 really good ones
  • Take each idea and decide what are the first couple of steps you can realistically take to get this idea moving
When you get an idea, and you feel it deep down that its a good one, take action on it immediately! Plain and simple.

Sure there are plenty of excuses and fears that will come up (not now, no money, too much to do, I'll look stupid, no time, e.t.c). However, why not ride the surge of new energy and the wave of excitement that comes with your idea and get it to manifest quickly and easily. You'll discover you are more likely to succeed with a lot less struggle and effort and with more fun as you bring it to life! 

For you next  great idea,follow the steps above and try and implement one thing each day for the next 21 days that will bring you closer to manifesting your idea ...and you'll see just how powerful and in control you truly are!

Your work-life balance is just a Choice away 06/30/2011

As an entrepreneur or business professional, we all wrestle with the Family, Career, Self-care, Religious/Spiritual balance. Do you sometimes feel that in order to have more balance in your life, you will have to make life altering changes?  

 In thinking so do you find it difficult to push through some of the challenges that arise and its easier just to stay right where you are to avoid the additional overwhelm and stress?  

 While that may be true for some people, most of you will experience more ease in the transition to finding work-life balance if you start by making small, intentional changes.

Recognize that all work and no play really does make 'Jane' a total party pooper; then ask yourself, "is it REALLY worth it?". When you choose work above all else you are choosing to live a life in a single dimension ...and life has many facets so step back and appreciate all of them.  

 Often times it is the small deliberate changes that ultimately have you feeling more peaceful, content, and in control at the end of the day. Here are a few small things you can implement right away that can make a big impact in your work-life balance:

  • Choose to have a family dinner one night a week.
  • Redistribute household responsibilities
  • Ask for help when you need it and 'outsource' work tasks - let go of some of the control
  • Set a timer for important tasks and stay focused for that hour - no phone, email, answering the door 
  • declare yourself satisfied at the end of every work day
  • Spend 15 minutes a day in quiet - read, meditate, take a bath, or a cat nap. But do something.
  • Set boundaries with people you love
  • Learn to say 'No' and say 'YES' to you  
  • Journal about your success, failures and challenges
  • meet-up with the girls once a month
  • schedule self-care activities and honour that time like you for would any other important appointment 
  • Focus on Easy, Lucrative and Fun activities  
Work-Life balance is about consciously making choices - every single day that move you toward or away from balance, personal fulfilment, heath and happiness. It is about choosing where to spend your energy, your time, and even your money.

    My partner in life is a sometimes serious, but mostly comical and support man named Barry Bailey, a Boxing/MMA sports trainer & coach.


     We have adopted 3 adorable children; Ballou - 11 yr old Staffordshire Terrier who is often mistaken as a 2yr old, Winston - a sometimes cranky 15yr old domestic cat and our newest addition, Maya, an energetic & fiesty 2yr old Tabby who we took in as a stray.
