We all know that massage feels good, but new evidence suggests that it can be even better for your health than previously thought.
Researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles noted that while some small studies had shown the health benefits of massage, their larger investigation revealed that Swedish massage triggers measurable and beneficial changes to both endocrine and immune system responses.

The researchers recruited 53 physically healthy volunteers who had no mental disorders and divided them into two groups: 29 of the volunteers received 45 minutes of Swedish massage while 24 received 45 minutes of light touch massage. Prior to massage, all the participants were fitted with intravenous catheters so that blood samples could be taken at intervals before and after massage.

Results showed significant changes in lymphocytes, white blood cells that are key players in immune system responses; a large decrease in a hormone (arginine vassopressin) believed to play a role in aggressive behavior and linked to prompting increases in the stress hormone cortisol; a decrease in cortisol levels; and a decrease in inflammatory cytokines, which are immune system mediators.

Side note from Melissa: cortisol is the hormone responsible for waking you up in the morning and works opposite to melatonin which is the hormone responsible for sleep. High stress = high cortisol levels. Therefore, Cortisol never turns off and melatonin never turns on, leading to issues with sleep. Having trouble sleeping lately? Massage can help!

What is Reiki?

"Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy." To read more info on Reiki

As I progress through my training in Deep Tissure Aromatherapy Massage, I am delighted to announce that I have had the opportunity to gain baby massage and pregnancy massage experience.
May 11th I attended a massage outreach to the Woman's Care Midwifery clinic in London to offer massage to expectant mothers at all different stages of pregnancy. During the same week our school opened the doors for a baby massage clinic for a day. Great techniques were shared with the mothers who's little ones were experiencing immediate results of relieving gas and constipation :0)

May 15th I was honoured to attend another outreach with my class offering massage at an Aids Retreat held annually at Windermere Manor in London. My most profound experience from that day was with my last client who was experiencing Nicotine withdrawal as she was quitting smoking. She was very lethargic before her treatment even required assistance to get onto the table. After her 20min session she was much more alert and very appreciative of a technique I included to help encourage the release of phlegm from her congested lungs. It's always a plus to witness people's positive experiences with massage!
