Energy Boosting Tip #1: No gulping allowed 05/22/2010
Do you, like so many, regularly experience a midday crash? It's that time of day when all you want is to shut your eyes, just for a few minutes but you can't leave for home yet because it's only 2:30 in the afternoon. For a pick-me-up, do you find your self reaching for a coffee or heading to the vending machine for a snack or one of those sugar filled energy drinks? Some of you may not know that there are 160 mg of caffeine in one 16 oz. can of energy drink compared to 80 mg of caffeine in one small Tim Hortons coffee. Not to mention many energy drinks are heavily concentrated with sugar; some common sports drinks contain the equivalent of twelve or more teaspoons of sugar per can. Generally, you are right back to where you started a few hours later anyway. Would you want to avoid the potential health risks these substances can cause? Ok, then what's another energy boosting option you ask? One that is easy to implement, cost effective and is naturally healthy? Believe it or not, this tip has nothing to do with what you eat, but HOW you eat. It's about chewing your food. Just chew every bite of your food 30 times. Silly but simple. And it works! Remember, the digestive process actually begins in our mouth and the proper digestion of food must be saturated by the enzymes produced in your saliva. Gulping down large chunks of food puts stress on your digestive system contributing to bloating, gas and other digestive issues. You will only get a fraction of the nutritional value robbing you of energy and vitality. Do you ever feel lousy or lethargic after a meal, no matter how healthy you have prepared it? My energy boost challenge to you: make a conscious effort to apply this tip during every meal over the next 5 days. Take note of any immediate changes and stop what it is that you're doing once in a while to tune into how your stomach is feeling after a meal. At the end of 5 days, ask your self the following: How was my energy level this week? How much did I actually get accomplished - was it more than usual? Was there a change in my focus, concentration or motivation? What digestive issues did I have that are now alleviated or even eliminated?
